Why are EV's vehicles of future and not today?

Electric vehicles have speed, power, tremendous acceleration, need low maintenance when compared to other vehicles and even electricity is cheaper than fuel in India. It’s far ahead of their competition. But it’s still the vehicle of the future rather than today. The only major reason for this is, the distance it can travel with a single charge is lower than a vehicle with full tank fuel. Due to this, the Electric Vehicle industry in India is far behind, with less than 1% of the total vehicle sales.
